Mp3tag — universal tag editor for Mac
A native macOS utility for editing audio metadata in bulk—artists, albums, track numbers, and cover art—across common music and podcast formats under one interface.
Libraries sprawl when files come from CDs, rippers, Bandcamp downloads, and old USB sticks. Mp3tag for Mac (by Florian Heidenreich, better known for the long-running Windows Mp3tag) lets you open a folder, select dozens of tracks, and write tags once. The File List and Tag Panel support multipage edits; Extended Tags exposes fields beyond the usual title and album slots. You can rename files from existing tags, pull tags from filenames, replace strings across fields, and run an auto-numbering wizard for track and disc numbers.
Formats, covers, and library cleanup
Supported types include MP3 (ID3v1 and ID3v2), MP4/M4A/M4B/M4V, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, AIFF, DSF, MPC, WavPack (WV), WAV (including large RF64 files in the 1.13 line), and Matroska containers (MKA/MKV/WebM). Cover art can be viewed, added, resized, and reformatted; Manage Covers (introduced earlier in the 1.12 series) helps reorder and replace embedded images across selections. Online Tag Sources can query Discogs and MusicBrainz for proper credits and artwork when local tags are empty or wrong.
Repetitive cleanup is handled with action groups—case conversion, field formatting, unwanted-field removal, cover sizing—run as reusable workflows. Flexible Tagging supports user-defined fields in a consistent way. The App Store privacy label states that no data is collected from the app.
Licensing, requirements, and version 1.13.2
Purchase is a one-time $24.99 on the Mac App Store (Family Sharing for up to six members) or via the vendor’s FastSpring store; a free 7-day trial counts only days you actually launch the app. Requirements are macOS 10.14.6 Mojave or later with native Apple Silicon support. The install is small (about 8.4 MB on the store listing) and ships in English plus fifteen other languages.
Version 1.13.2 (July 15, 2026) is a maintenance patch: it fixes a regression where toolbar items failed to draw correctly on macOS 10.14.6 and macOS 10.15. The broader 1.13.x line earlier added RF64 WAV over 4 GB, a Where From extended-attribute cleanup action, and File List editing fixes; 1.13.2 itself is aimed at users still on older Mojave or Catalina systems who hit broken toolbars.
