DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.0 for Mac

DaVinci Resolve Studio is Blackmagic Design’s paid, all-in-one post-production application for Mac: Cut and Edit timelines, Fusion VFX, Color grading, Fairlight audio, and Deliver—plus in version 21 a dedicated Photo page for still-image finishing with the same node-based grading toolset.

One project from assembly to master

Resolve is built around pages rather than separate apps. You assemble on Cut or Edit, grade on Color, composite in Fusion, mix on Fairlight, and export from Deliver without round-tripping XML or rendered intermediates. Blackmagic Cloud and multi-user projects let teams share bins, grades, and timelines when a facility runs collaborative workflows.

What Studio adds on Apple Silicon

The free Resolve edition covers a wide edit-and-grade path, but Studio unlocks the DaVinci Neural Engine, advanced noise reduction, extra Resolve FX, stereoscopic tools, immersive audio, and AI features such as IntelliSearch and CineFocus. Blackmagic documents native support on Apple M-series Macs; published macOS requirements for version 21 call for macOS 15 Sequoia or later on Apple Silicon, with 8 GB RAM minimum or 16 GB when using Fusion heavily. AI analysis, Fusion, and high-resolution RAW benefit from 32 GB unified memory in real projects.

Photo page and stills in the same grade

Version 21 adds a Photo page so photographers and colorists can manage albums, tether supported Canon and Sony cameras on macOS, and grade stills with node-based Color tools, LUTs, and Resolve FX. Albums flow into Cut, Edit, Color, and Fusion—useful for hybrid shooters who deliver both motion and stills from one shoot.

Version 21.0 and licensing

Studio is a one-time purchase (currently listed at $295) with no subscription. Blackmagic notes that project libraries remain compatible with Resolve 20.3.2, but any project opened in 21 cannot be reopened in 20.3.2—back up libraries before upgrading. Version 21.0 is the final release after the public beta cycle; download from Blackmagic’s site, not the Mac App Store.

Pros & Cons Show details

✅ PROS

  • Studio keeps edit, color, Fusion, Fairlight, and the new Photo page in one Mac app, which reduces export/import friction across a typical finishing pipeline.
  • The paid license is a one-time purchase, so long-term Mac users avoid recurring subscription costs common among rival pro video tools.
  • Apple Silicon Macs get native Metal acceleration, including a Speed Warp Metal option that Blackmagic says can speed up Neural Engine retiming on macOS.
  • The Photo page brings node-based grading, albums, tethered capture, and cloud collaboration to stills without leaving the Resolve ecosystem you already use for video.
  • Studio unlocks the Neural Engine, advanced noise reduction, extra Resolve FX, stereoscopic tools, and immersive Fairlight workflows that the free edition does not include.

❌ CONS

  • Studio costs $295 upfront, and many headline AI tools, noise reduction, and advanced delivery options are not available in the free Resolve edition.
  • Published requirements for Resolve 21 on Mac target macOS 15 Sequoia on Apple Silicon with 16 GB RAM for serious Fusion work, which excludes older Intel Macs and lightly specced machines.
  • The interface spans multiple specialized pages, so new Mac editors face a steeper learning curve than in a single-purpose NLE such as Final Cut Pro.
  • Several AI features require downloading models through Extras Download Manager and running clip analysis before IntelliSearch or similar tools become useful.
  • Projects created or opened in version 21 cannot be reopened in Resolve 20.3.2, so upgrading without backups risks locking active jobs into the new branch.
✅ What's New in 21.0 Beta 4 Show details
  1. [Photo page] — Adds a dedicated stills workflow with albums, LightBox view, node-based grading, tethered Canon/Sony capture on macOS, and Blackmagic Cloud integration.
  2. [AI IntelliSearch] — Lets you search the Media Pool and photo libraries by people, objects, or dialog after analysis, speeding clip location in large Mac libraries.
  3. [AI CineFocus] — Simulates depth of field and rack focus from a depth map, useful when you need selective blur without reshooting.
  4. [MultiMaster trim manager] — Generates multiple HDR and SDR trim deliverables from one graded timeline, reducing duplicate grading passes for multi-format delivery.
  5. [Fairlight folder tracks] — Collapses groups of audio tracks into a single composite row so complex mixes stay navigable on the Fairlight page.
  6. [Krokodove in Fusion] — Adds 70+ new graphics and utility tools to Fusion, expanding motion-design options without leaving Resolve.
  7. [Expanded keyframing on Cut/Edit] — Adds loop, ping-pong, and relative ease modes, multi-clip keyframing, Fusion effect keyframes, and OGraf/Lottie support on the timeline.
  8. [VR180/VR360 and Apple Immersive] — Broadens immersive mastering with Panomap rotation, ILPD retargeting in Fusion, and foveated rendering for Apple Immersive workflows.
  9. [macOS Speed Warp Metal] — Offers a Metal-accelerated Speed Warp path on Mac that Blackmagic positions as up to 2× faster for Neural Engine retiming operations.

  1. Ok the project not rendering issue can be fixed by turning off background rendering.

Project not loading with cinefocus effect applied also has a work around Launch DaVinci Resolve and open a blank, brand-new project.Go to the Edit Page or Color Page.Click the Bypass Color Profiles and Fusion Effects button. (It looks like a small colorful circle icon located at the top right of the viewer panel). When deactivated, it turns grey.Without closing Resolve, go to the top menu and select File > Open Project (or use the Project Manager).Open your crashed project. It should now load because the heavy AI effect is blocked from rendering.

  2. there are many issues … I installed the new version downloaded from blackmagic and applied the Option #2 – script Script Patch without file replacement. the program installs fine. but there are issue loading projects specially if you have applied the new focus blur effects also when you try to export it doesnt do anything. either its the fault of the patch it self or this release of resolve is not fully baked yet.

    1. Same here. Panel Effect doesn’t display correctly on MacBook Pro M1 Pro. And when you select a Node, the blue highlight for the selected node doesn’t show.

    2. I too have a settings issue on the color page, a work around (not ideal) add your fx to the node, then add another serial node (minimum of two nodes) If I want to adjust the settings on one node (greyed out) I click on the other node then back onto the one I want to adjust and the settings are there, sometimes you make an adjustment and then it changes so you have to do the same again. not ideal.
I have two versions on my Macbook o sometimes it just easier to open in the previous version (which works) but we all want the latest,

  3. It looks like this Beta 4 works. Although I entered the command in Terminal and macOS asked for my password, DaVinci was still asking for a serial number when I launched it. However, it eventually worked after I performed a clean installation of Beta 4 from the link, then downloaded the patch and installed it normally.

Thanks to the uploader. I’ll come back with more feedback.

      1. download davinci v21 studio from blackmagic site, mount image, install, do not open.
download patch from here (the one without replacing files), mount image, open, enter settings go to privacy&secirity click open anyway, then install patch, wait for process to finish
        done, enjoy

    1. Feel free to help me with the proccess as i am newbie..I need the original model with AI and all..Doest matter the model if its the 21 or 20..Just need the cracked model and need guidance…Thank you

  4. I wonder how the new features in this beta version compare to previous ones. Always interested in what updates are worth checking out.

  5. Can we get a new version soon please? Trouble clicking nodes again, this is less usable than the last beta version.

  6. Weird on Sequoia 15.7.7 : in Colors, the effects settings panel appears and disappears immediately. No problem with the beta version.

  7. I used terminal and Grant Terminal Full Disk Access but nothing happens, terminal close after enter the scrip help please

    1. after install davinci, hit patch nr 2, then go to system settings/privacy&security and at the bottom you will find “open anyway”. the patch I mean. hit it and terminal should appear. enter your mac password, if any, then wait to finish the process

  8. Thank you uploader. Seems to be beta 4 (Build 47).
Also it says that update 21 studio is available, therefore must be beta 4.

    Installation:
    1.mount image
    2. install davinci
    3. install patch (option 2-without replacing files)

I tried for 2 times for complete the process, first time patch was not installed. So, if it asks for serial number, quit davinci, grant terminal full disk acces and try again to patch 2 until it works. In terminal you will be asked for password, it’s your Mac password. Type it and hit Return. Wait for patch to install and it’s done.

    Enjoy.

    1. Thank you so much, it works fine, and indeed… apparently seems to be build 47 when you ask for about DaVinci.

  9. Important: Grant Terminal Full Disk Access before you continue.

How I installed it: Script patch installation — Option 2: script patch without replacing files.

  10. Open the file 1.ScriptPatch.
  11. Compatibility
    macOS 14.5 and later

    Architecture
    ARM, x86 (64-bit)
