BetterZip
A native macOS archive manager from MacItBetter for opening dozens of formats, creating and updating archives, previewing contents, and applying encryption—without always extracting everything to a temp folder first.
How it fits a Mac workflow
You open an archive in a Finder-like browser, search or select only the files you need, drag them out, or modify the archive in place (add, delete, rename, edit). Presets store create/extract settings—format, destination, passwords, filters, optional post-scripts—so repeated jobs stay one click from Finder’s BetterZip menu, toolbar button, Share extension, or Services. Quick Look support (including a free Quick Look extension/generator path) lets you preview items inside archives. Filtering can exclude junk like Thumbs.db or VCS folders on create/extract. AppleScript, Automator actions, and hooks for tools such as Alfred, LaunchBar, Dropzone, and Hazel support automation.
Create formats documented for the current product line include ZIP, DMG, TAR family archives, Zstandard, Brotli, 7-ZIP, XAR, and RAR via an external command-line utility. Extraction covers a long list: ZIP, RAR, 7-ZIP, DMG, ISO, CAB, DEB/RPM, SIT/SITX, ePub, JAR variants, winmail.dat (TNEF), and many others. AES-256 encryption, a password vault for known archive passwords, and a password generator cover secure sharing. Cross-platform ZIP hygiene options can strip Mac-specific files for Windows-friendly archives. Testing archives without full extract helps spot damage early.
Licensing, requirements, and the “6.0” label
Direct licenses are commonly sold around $24.95 for household use; Setapp also carries the app. The marketed BetterZip 5 line requires macOS 10.13 or later and ships as a universal app with Apple Silicon support in the 5.x era. Official downloads and version history currently list 5.4.2 (27 March 2026) as the newest public build. The developer has stated that work on BetterZip 6 is progressing and that closed beta testing was planned—but a public BetterZip 6.0 download, version-history entry, and feature changelog were not published on the vendor site at the time of this research. Treat a catalog entry labeled “BetterZip 6.0” carefully: confirm the binary you have against About/version strings, and do not assume undocumented v6-only features. Until official 6.0 notes appear, the capabilities above reflect the documented BetterZip 5 product line.
