AltTab Pro
An open-source macOS window switcher that replaces app-only ⌘-Tab with a Windows-style overview of every open window, live thumbnails, and deep keyboard customization.
Typical Mac workflow
You install AltTab from GitHub or alt-tab.app, grant Accessibility permission, and bind a shortcut such as Option+Tab. Holding the key opens a row or grid of window previews; arrow keys or the mouse select a target, and release switches instantly or keeps the panel open depending on your setting. Hover previews show the full window on top; traffic-light controls let you close, minimize, or fullscreen without leaving the switcher. Status badges mark minimized, hidden, or other-Space windows so you can tell where a document actually lives.
The free tier covers the core switcher with thumbnails, dark mode, trackpad gestures, per-app exceptions, and a CLI for scripting focus changes. AltTab Pro adds typed search across window and app names, auto-sizing thumbnails, App Icons and Titles layout styles, and up to nine independent shortcuts with separate filters. Version 11.0 introduced the Pro tier while keeping the base app open source; a 14-day Pro trial is included for new users. Pro costs $9.99 one-time for the current major version or $24.99 Lifetime, with three activations per license.
Compatibility and version 11.4.2
AltTab supports macOS 10.13 High Sierra through current releases on Intel and Apple Silicon, with no telemetry according to the vendor. Version 11.4.0 reworked window tracking to use WindowServer events instead of Accessibility APIs for better responsiveness and fewer edge-case bugs. Version 11.4.2, released 3 July 2026, is a patch that fixes a launch crash on Intel Macs (GitHub issue #5819), following a related fix in 11.4.1 the same day.
