Shadowrocket is a rule-based proxy utility for macOS (and other Apple platforms) that captures HTTP, HTTPS, and TCP traffic from applications and routes it according to domain, IP, GeoIP, and custom rules—you supply your own proxy servers and configuration files.

How it works on Mac

After purchase on the Mac App Store, you import server profiles (URL, QR code, or iCloud Drive) and define routing: proxy, direct, or reject per domain suffix, keyword, CIDR range, or GeoIP lookup. Shadowrocket can log requests, block ads by domain, rewrite URLs, map DNS locally, and decrypt HTTPS for inspection when you install its certificate. It supports modern proxy stacks (Shadowsocks, VMess, VLESS, Trojan, Hysteria, SSH tunnels, and plugin transports) plus encrypted DNS (DoH, DoT, DoQ). A Control Center widget and on-device traffic stats help toggle and monitor the tunnel during daily Mac use.

What it is not

Shadowrocket ships no servers or subscriptions—the developer states users must provide their own proxy resources. It is a client tool, not a turnkey VPN service. macOS 10.15 or later is required. Legality and acceptable use depend on your network policies and jurisdiction; configure only servers you are authorized to use.

Version 2.2.85

Released 22 May 2026 per the official Shadowrocket News channel, build 2.2.85 adds Mieru protocol support with reliable UDP transport, refines ECH mode detection, simplifies Control Center widget status logic, and fixes tunnel dequeue collisions plus WebSocket Early Data path parsing truncation. It follows the 2.2.84 ECH work and precedes 2.2.86–2.2.87 protocol updates now on the App Store.

Pros & Cons Show details

✅ PROS

  • Shadowrocket offers granular rule-based routing on Mac—finer control than a simple on/off VPN for split tunneling by domain or region.
  • One-time $2.99 Mac App Store purchase with Family Sharing beats recurring VPN subscriptions if you already operate your own proxy infrastructure.
  • Broad protocol support (Shadowsocks, VLESS, Hysteria, SSH, DoH/DoT/DoQ, and more) suits users who manage heterogeneous server configs.
  • Version 2.2.85 adds Mieru protocol with reliable UDP, expanding options for modern proxy deployments on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
  • Built-in traffic logging, speed measurement, and script filters help Mac power users debug network behavior without separate packet-capture tools.

❌ CONS

  • Shadowrocket includes no proxy servers—you must source, pay for, and legally operate third-party configs, which raises the setup bar for beginners.
  • Rule files, certificates, and protocol options require technical knowledge; misconfiguration can break apps or leak traffic outside the tunnel.
  • App Store availability varies by country; the app has been removed from some regional stores in the past, complicating purchase and updates.
  • HTTPS decryption and deep packet inspection features demand trusting a local MITM certificate, which is inappropriate for many everyday Mac workflows.
  • Build 2.2.85 is superseded on the App Store by 2.2.87; users on the latest store build get newer fixes (HTTP/3, Hysteria, VLESS buffers) not listed in 2.2.85 notes.
✅ What's New in 2.2.85 Show details
  1. [Mieru protocol support] — Adds the Mieru proxy protocol including reliable UDP transport mode for configs that rely on Mieru servers.
  2. [ECH mode detection] — Refines Encrypted Client Hello detection and strengthens configuration validation to reduce misconfigured ECH node crashes.
  3. [Control Center widget] — Simplifies status checking and VPN toggle logic in the Control Center widget for faster connect/disconnect on Mac and iOS.
  4. [Tunnel dequeue fix] — Avoids proxy stream dequeue flag collisions that could destabilize active tunnel sessions under load.
  5. [WebSocket Early Data fix] — Fixes parameter truncation when parsing WebSocket Early Data paths in the backend, preventing broken transport configs.
