SaneClip

A privacy-first clipboard history manager for Mac that stores copied text and images on device, with optional iCloud sync through your own Apple account rather than vendor servers.

How it fits a Mac workflow

SaneClip runs from the menu bar and records what you copy so you can search, pin, and paste older clips again. The default shortcut opens history at the cursor or menu bar icon; number shortcuts paste recent items without opening the panel. For longer sessions, a detachable floating history window supports keyboard navigation, filters, drag-out to other apps, and a live preview pane in Pro.

The design assumes sensitive data on the clipboard: copies from common password managers can be excluded automatically, and Pro can detect and auto-purge patterns such as credit cards or tokens on a schedule you set. History can be locked behind Touch ID or your Mac login password, and Pro adds AES-256-GCM encryption at rest with keys in the system keychain.

Pro features beyond basic history

After a 14-day full Pro trial, a one-time purchase unlocks unlimited history, OCR sidecars for screenshots and window grabs, paste-as-plain-text and smart paste (URL cleaning, code detection), text transforms, snippets with placeholders, clipboard rules, a reorderable paste stack for form filling, item notes, and JSON export or import. iCloud sync pushes Mac history to the free iPhone and iPad companion while the mobile app is active; encrypted sync payloads stay unreadable to SaneApps when History Encryption is enabled.

Distribution and requirements

SaneClip requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). It is available as a direct download from the developer, on the Mac App Store, via Setapp, and through Homebrew. The project is open source under the MIT license on GitHub. Intel Macs are not supported on current builds.

Version 2.3.21 is a small maintenance release focused on direct-license validation for customers who bought the SaneApps Bundle; clipboard behavior and UI are unchanged in the official changelog for this build.

Pros & Cons Show details

✅ PROS

  • Clipboard data stays on your Mac by default, with no telemetry or vendor cloud storage of clip contents according to the developer’s privacy model.
  • Touch ID or Mac password lock, optional history encryption, sensitive-data detection, and password-manager exclusions address real clipboard privacy risks.
  • Pro adds practical power-user tools—paste stack, snippets, OCR sidecars, smart paste, and clipboard rules—without a subscription after purchase.
  • iCloud sync to iPhone and iPad uses your own Apple account, and encrypted sync keeps payloads unreadable to SaneApps when History Encryption is on.
  • Native macOS UI with floating history, drag-out, keyboard shortcuts, and open-source code under MIT supports transparency-minded users.

❌ CONS

  • Apple Silicon only (M1 or newer) with macOS 14+ leaves Intel Mac owners without an official path on current releases.
  • Full feature set requires Pro after the 14-day trial; the free tier on App Store builds is limited compared with the direct Pro offering.
  • iCloud sync to mobile depends on the companion app being active and on Apple’s iCloud stack, which can lag or fail independently of SaneClip.
  • Version 2.3.21 changes only bundle licensing validation, so users expecting feature updates get a narrow patch with no listed UI or clipboard fixes.
  • Competing clipboard tools on Mac (Paste, Maccy, Pastebot) may offer broader platform support, richer team features, or lower effective cost depending on your setup.
✅ What's New in 2.3.21 Show details
  1. [Maintenance release] — Version 2.3.21 is a licensing patch dated 2026-07-18; no clipboard, UI, or sync changes are listed for this build.
  2. [Direct license validation] — Improves validation so the SaneApps Bundle correctly activates SaneClip Pro for valid direct Mac purchases.
  3. [SaneApps Bundle] — Customers who bought the one-time SaneApps Bundle should see Pro unlock reliably after this fix when their direct Mac license validates.
  4. [Documented — local-first history] — SaneClip continues to store clipboard history on device with optional iCloud sync through the user’s own Apple account, not SaneApps servers.
  5. [Documented — Pro stack] — Pro still includes unlimited history, Touch ID lock, encryption, OCR, paste stack, snippets, and smart paste after the 14-day trial.
  6. [Prior context — 2.3.20] — The preceding release fixed keep-open fixed history pastes so the next selected clip returns to the previously active app instead of SaneClip.
