Mellel
A native macOS word processor from RedleX/Mellel Software built for long scholarly, scientific, and technical documents where structure, citations, and multilingual typography matter more than slide layouts.
Who it is for on Mac
Mellel targets thesis writers, academics, and publishers who need reliable auto-titles, outlines, cross-references, footnotes, indexes, and track changes without fighting a general office suite. It is especially known for right-to-left and mixed-direction text (Hebrew, Arabic, and similar scripts) alongside Western languages. Bookends integration and the Citation Inspector (from the 6.6 line) let you audit references inside the document when you use that bibliography manager.
Day-to-day work happens in Mellel’s style-driven editor: character, paragraph, page, and section palettes control layout; find-and-replace and template tools support book-length projects; and DOCX import/export helps exchange files with collaborators on Word. The app runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and is sold directly from the developer rather than the Mac App Store.
Licensing and version 6.7.0
New licenses cost about $70 with two years of included updates; older owners upgrade for about $45 per the Mellel store. macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later is required for current builds. Version 6.7.0 (June 30, 2026) introduces a unified Mellel Color Picker, drag-and-drop image replacement, redesigned palettes, and assorted bug fixes documented on the official release page.
