iA Writer
A distraction-free Markdown writing app for Mac that strips away formatting chrome so you draft in plain text first and style the document only when you preview or export.
Information Architects AG built iA Writer around a typewriter-like focus: custom Mono, Duo, and Quattro typefaces, Focus Mode that dims everything except the current sentence or paragraph, and Syntax Control that color-codes parts of speech so weak verbs and filler stand out. Style Check flags clichés and clutter on device. You organize notes in a Library that can sit on local folders or cloud locations, search across libraries, and jump between files without leaving the window. Preview shows HTML-styled output from Markdown; export targets include PDF, Microsoft Word (.docx), HTML, and publishing hooks such as WordPress or Medium depending on your setup. Authorship tracks what you typed versus pasted or AI-assisted text with color cues so collaborative or AI-assisted drafts stay accountable.
Day-to-day Mac workflow
Typical use is drafting essays, posts, or academic chapters in Markdown, keeping links and images as plain-text embeds, then switching to Preview before export. On Mac, Quick Search (including outline navigation in the Writer 8 design) jumps to headings, filenames, or in-document hits; the Command Palette (⇧⌘P) reaches formatting, export, and Authorship actions by typing. A compact Library layout can hide dates and excerpts for denser browsing, with starred favorites. Night writing uses inverted dark appearance. The Mac edition is a separate one-time purchase from iPhone/iPad; the vendor also sells direct with a 7-day free trial (no credit card) from ia.net. App Store privacy labeling reports usage data and diagnostics may be collected but not linked to your identity.
Licensing on the Mac App Store is about $49.99 one-time with Family Sharing for up to six members. Requirements are macOS 10.15 or later; the store build is small (about 17 MB). Languages include English plus ten others. It is intentionally not Microsoft Word: few layout tools, strong focus on prose. If you need complex page design, use Pages or Word after export.
Version 8.0.5
Version 8.0.5 is a maintenance release: the Mac App Store What’s New states that it fixes a few small bugs while shipping the Writer 8 feature set. Writer 8 itself brought Liquid Glass UI for macOS 26 and later, a system-matching app icon (including clearer “clear” icon support), Document Outline inside Quick Search, Command Palette, compact Library with starred favorites, and Authorship menus that show author colors. Install 8.0.5 for stability on top of that redesign; do not expect new writing tools beyond the bug fixes in this point release.
